CYCLING TRIP FROM HANOI TO SAIGON AND MEKONG DETAL 21 DAY 20 NIGHT

Tour information

Trip Profile: Cycle through the lands of the Vietnamese,  Laotian and Cambodian people on this extended tour through the heart of southeast Asia.  You’ll start in Saigon, near the mouth of the vast Mekong River.  Heading north we encounter some gentle moutains first, then ride down to the magnificent coastline along the S shaped “belly” of Vietnam. The central coast of Vietnam is loaded with centuries of history and all modern conveniences.  We visit Ninh Binh, the area so beautiful that it’s compared with UNESCO world-heritage listed Ha Long Bay.  In Hanoi, “The Grand Lady of the Orient”, we rest before turning west.  Over the mountains and valleys, through Sapa and Heaven’s Pass, to the border with Laos.  So much changes at the border!  No more big cities and busy farmland.  The towns in Laos are small and surrounded by ancient forests.  The people are from a different heritage with traditions not seen in Vietnam.  The first riding here is unforgettable, through forests and villages and lots of downhills. Luang Prabang is where we meet the mighty Mekong River.  This was once a Kingdom separate to Laos, and is a modern-day hub for travellers from around the world.  From gem and gold traders to village crafts to French pastries, you’ll find it all here. Continuing south now, we cycle in and out of many river valleys with lots of sights and activities until we reach the capital of Laos: Vientiane.  From here we make a short trip down the Mekong River to Pakse. Again Laos surprises us with a sophisticated city (and one that too few people visit).  After hard work in northern Laos, cycling south from here is a delight.  There are ancient temples and miles of riverside riding.  A chance to see rare wildlife, the world’s widest waterfall and a camp in the jungle. Crossing into Cambodia… you’re right to think that it’s very different here.  We enter the most beautiful part of Cambodia, then move to the heart of the Khmer Empire of 1,000 years ago.  The cycling can be really challenging and the Khmer people are really charming.  There’s nowhere on Earth like Cambodia, and there’s nowhere like Angkor Wat, with its massive temples and gardens and lakes.  Local guides tell the fascinating history of an Empire that rose to glory and faded back into jungle.  We take a boat through Tonle Sap lake to the Cambodian Capital: Phnomh Penh.  We go on to visit the terrible Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge regime and soon it’s time for the last turn, from south to east, towards the Cambodian Vietnamese border then into the Mekong Delta. It's the ricebowl of Asia and the delta of one of the world’s greatest rivers. This is great cycling.  Some say the best in all of Indochina.  The air is always warm, the roads are totally flat, the countryside is lush.  Each town and city has a particular character and style. How appropriate for the trip to end with a floating market and cycling in the heart of the Mekong delta.  This trip has all levels of adventure.  On the bike it’s a huge challenge to the legs to complete the course.  For the heart and soul there are natural and farming landscapes, local ethnic cultures, encounters with wdlife, ancient and modern history and of course relaxing and a abundant food.  Whether you do it all in one epic and extensive adventure, or experience one section is up to you.   Welcome to the beating heart of southeast Asia.
